Le Président de la République exprime, au nom de la France, toute sa solidarité aux Etats-Unis après la terrible tornade qui a frappé hier l'Oklahoma faisant de très nombreuses victimes et blessés.

Il salue la mobilisation de tous ceux qui font face avec courage et détermination à cette situation exceptionnelle. Et adresse, aux familles et aux proches des victimes, les condoléances de notre pays.

Sonic Generator presents free outdoor screening of Fritz Lang's Sci-Fi masterpiece Metropolis

On Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 8:00 p.m., Sonic Generator, the contemporary music ensemble-in-residence at Georgia Tech, will present a free screening of Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction masterpiece, Metropolis, with a live performance of a new musical score composed by Martin Matalon, in a unique outdoor setting at the Woodruff Arts Center.

Metropolis, a milestone of German expressionism and an inspiration for science fiction films such as Blade Runner and The Matrix, portrays a dystopian world in which the poor tend to futuristic machines and inevitably clash with the wealthy elite. Due to censorship and the long running-time, the film was cut substantially following its 1927 premiere and large portions of the film were lost. Recently found footage in Argentina has restored Metropolis to its original length, and to accommodate the new running time, the French studio IRCAM asked Martin Matalon to compose a new score that would closely follow the editing.

Sonic Generator's performance — featuring sixteen instrumentalists and electronic sounds — will present the American premiere of Martin Matalon's score for this newly restored edition. Performed on the piazza at the Woodruff Arts Center, with the film screened dramatically onto the High Museum of Art, Metropolis will showcase an iconic film and cutting-edge music in a unique space.

This unique event is presented in partnership with the Alliance Française d'Atlanta and the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta, which encourage the study of French and German language and culture, respectively, and foster cultural, intellectual, and artistic exchanges ; and with Flux Projects, which supports artists in creating innovative temporary public art throughout Atlanta. Additional support for Metropolis comes from the Franco-German Fund and the French-American Fund for Contemporary Music, a program of FACE with major support from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, SACEM, CulturesFrance and the Florence Gould Foundation.

Le 28 mai à 20h00, Sonic Generator, l'ensemble de musique contemporaine de Georgia Tech, accompagnera la projection en plein air et gratuite du très célèbre film Metropolis (1927) du réalisateur allemand Fritz Lang. Le film sera présenté avec, pour accompagnement musical, la nouvelle partition du compositeur Martin Matalon. L'évènement aura lieu sur la Piazza Sifly du Woodruff Arts Center.

Metropolis, est un film expressionniste de science-fiction allemand de 1927 considéré comme une source d'inspiration pour de nombreux films ultérieurs de science-fiction tels que Blade Runner et The Matrix.

Après un long processus de restauration, la version originale du film, retrouvée en 2008 en Argentine, a été présentée au public allemand en 2010. Afin de célébrer cette restauration, l'IRCAM a sollicité le chef d'orchestre et compositeur Martin Matalon pour la composition d'une nouvelle bande originale.

Associant un ensemble de 16 musiciens à un dispositif électroacoustique, Sonic Generator présentera l'avant-première américaine de la musique de Martin Matalon pour le film Métropolis récemment restauré.

Gratuit et ouvert au public, cet événement unique est présenté par Georgia Tech, Flux projects, the Woodruff Arts Center, l'Alliance française et le Goethe Zentrum d'Atlanta, le Fonds franco-américain de Musique Contemporaine et avec les soutiens du Fonds Franco-Allemand et de l'Institut Français.

France honors Baxter Jones, lover and ambassador of the Francophile tradition in Atlanta

On May 29, 2013, Consul General Denis Barbet will present the insignia of knight in the Order of Arts and Letters to Atlanta's own Baxter Jones. Lover of the French language and culture, amateur art collector, and key patron of America's last remaining French-speaking theatre company, Baxter Jones is truly a remarkable ambassador of the French culture.

Jones' love of the French language and culture began at a very young age. Born into a very Francophile family, Baxter Jones inherited his parents' passion for art, modernist music, and France. Always fascinated by French history, literature and cinema, He learned French at the Lovett School and the Alliance Française d'Atlanta. He later studied in Europe, and ever since has nourished his passion for France with several trips to his adopted country each year.

Lawyer with Johnson & Ward since 1987, Baxter Jones is a highly affluent and respected member of the arts community. Through his commitment to the French institutions and associations of this region, he has contributed considerably to increasing the presence of French culture in Atlanta. He has been a member of several of the French associations for numerous years including the Alliance Française d'Atlanta and the French-American Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta. From its inception in 1996, he has been a part of the Théâtre du Rêve, the only existing French-speaking theatre company in the United States—first as a member of the Board of Directors, then as the President.

“In addition to all of his many endeavors to promote local artists, Baxter Jones has been an integral part of keeping Atlanta's Théâtre du Rêve going strong,” said Consul General Denis Barbet. “This French-American theatre company is a real gem, and we are very grateful for all that Baxter Jones has done to promote this company and French culture in general.”

In 2006, he served as a member of the host committee which helped oversee the Louvre-Atlanta exhibition and cooperation that took place from 2007-2010 between the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Louvre Museum in Paris. This cooperation heightened the French cultural presence in the region and offered Atlanta the unique opportunity to view key works from the Louvre. Since 2009 Jones has been a member of the “Amis du Louvre”, and since 2011 he has been part of the Board of Directors of the High Museum.

In addition to his great support of the French institutions, he is an avid supporter of the arts community in general. Former board member of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Horizon Theatre, and PushPush theatre, Jones is an advocate of local art as well as an amateur art collector.

Passionné de la langue et de la culture françaises, collectionneur et amateur d'art et très impliqué dans la vie du « Théâtre du Rêve », compagnie de théâtre francophone basée à Atlanta, Baxter Jones est un remarquable ambassadeur de la culture et de la langue françaises.

Né dans une famille francophile, Baxter Jones a hérité la passion de ses parents pour l'art, la musique moderne et la France. Après avoir appris le français à l'école Lovett ainsi qu'à l'Alliance française d'Atlanta, Baxter Jones a poursuivi ses études en Europe et a continué à nourrir sa passion pour la France à travers de fréquentes visites.

Avocat chez Johnson & Ward depuis 1987, Baxter Jones est un membre respecté dans la communauté artistique d'Atlanta. A travers ses engagements dans les institutions et associations françaises de cette ville, il a contribué à la présence de la culture française à Atlanta.

En 2006, Baxter Jones a fait partie du comité d'accueil qui a organisé l'opération “Louvre-Atlanta”, et ce de 2007 à 2010 entre le High Museum of Art à Atlanta et le Musée du Louvre à Paris. Cette coopération a renforcé la présence culturelle française dans la région et a offert à la ville d'Atlanta l'occasion unique de voir des œuvres majeures du Musée du Louvre. Depuis 2009, Baxter Jones fait partie de l'Association « Amis du Louvre » et, depuis 2011, du conseil d'administration du High. Ancien membre des conseils d'administrations de l'Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Horizon Theatre, et de PushPush Theatre, Baxter Jones défend l'importance de l'art local.

The Official Selection of the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival

On April 26, the updated Official Selection of the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival was announced, following the April 18 press conference in Paris. This year, a number of French and American movies have been selected in both the competition and the Un Certain Regard category.

Running from May 15-26, the 2013 Cannes Film Festival will open with premiere of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, and will close with the South African film, Zulu by Jérôme Salle, starring Orlando Bloom and Forest Whittaker. Both of these films are out-of-competition. 20 films are vying for the Palme d'Or, the highest prize awarded at the festival in the competition section. In the category “Un Certain Regard”, which focuses on works that have an original aim and aesthetic, 18 films have been selected to compete, including the opening film by Sofia Coppola, The Bling Ring.

Stephen Spielberg will head this year's jury which will include Ang Lee, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Auteuil among others.

Nous venons d'apprendre que des explosions dans la ville de Boston ont fait, selon un bilan provisoire, deux morts et de nombreux blessés.

Dans ces moments difficiles, nos pensées sont avec les familles des victimes et avec les blessés.

Nous tenons également à assurer les autorités locales et fédérales de notre soutien et de notre totale solidarité.

Le Président du Sénat, Jean-Pierre Bel, fait part de son émotion après les événements tragiques survenus à l'arrivée du marathon de Boston.

Il condamne un acte lâche et aveugle qui a conduit à la mort de trois personnes et fait de nombreux blessés. Il assure les autorités locales et fédérales américaines du total soutien du Sénat de la République française dans cette épreuve.

We have just learned that explosions in the city of Boston have, according to provisional reports, left two people dead and many others injured.

At this difficult time, our thoughts are with the victims' families and the injured.

We also want to assure the local and federal authorities of our support and our wholehearted solidarity.
