From the desk of the Consul General - November 2016 [fr]

Dear French and American Friends,

Last month was quite busy!

First and foremost, a word of solidarity to those who were touched by Hurricane Matthew and who are still dealing with the aftermath, in Georgia and the Carolinas. et qui continuent encore aujourd’hui d’en subir les conséquences, en Géorgie ou dans les deux Caroline. We must also render hommage to the crisis management teams in place by the local authorities as well as the wisdom of those who respected the isntructions and evacuated the most vulnerable areas, thereby limiting the human impact.

In Atlanta, the 7th Annual France-Atlanta attracted more than 3,000 people. Following a convivial Preview reception at the Metro Atlanta Chamber in presence of Mayor Kasim Reed, a rich program took place over a two-week period with the participation of experts and artists from all horizons. We would like to thank all of our sponsors and partners, particularly, Georgia Tech: without them, none of the ten fabulous events would have been possible. We will remember the fun and passionate moments, particularly with Plantu and his "Cartoonists for Peace", the debates between scientists and academics on major topics as Cybersecurity or the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, magnificient artistic performances or still exchanges animated around humanitarian questions in presence of François Grünewald. I couldn’t forget of course our partner city Toulouse, represented by the City Councilmember Aviv Zonabend, nor Noé Soulié, the associated artist of the Centre de Développement Chorégraphique, and the contribution of this partnership symbolized by the cross-visits of four startups between Atlanta and the Rose City. A big thanks to everyone for this fabulous 2016 edition.

In the economic domain, an annual meeting on investment in France (« Investor’s Month »), under the aegis of Business France and the French Foreign Trade Advisors of Atlanta, brought together at the Residence companies such as Coca-Cola, Agco, SWM et Graphic Packaging, which invested or plans to increase their capacity in France — proof, if ever there was, of the attractiveness of our territory abroad, as the inauguration of the new FedEx terminal at Roissy Charles de Gaulle later this month will brilliantly demonstrate. The economic themes were at the center of discussions that took place with Ambassador Gérard ARAUD in Washington on October 20, in presence of different French playerss, both public and private, of the « Economic Diplomacy » in the United States. Finally, the French-American Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta organized its annual Crystal Peach Awards as part of France-Atlanta, honoring this year the companies Gravotech, SWM and Quipment, in presence of their keynote speaker, Allen Proithis, Président of SIGFOX North America.

2017 will bring about the opportunity to reflect on the major event that, 100 years ago, brough the United States alongside the Allies of the First World War. Two events will give us a foretaste this month, the screening of « Joyeux Noël », a magnificent hommage to the brotherhood of the European nations beyond conflict, and a series of performances of « Silent Night » at the Atlanta Opera. I will also have the occasion to commemorate this Centennial during a visit to Tennessee, highlighting the invaluable role of the US Armed Forces in world conflicts in Europe during the 20th Century.

See you next month!

Consul général de France
