Today, M. Alain Juppé, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, received at the Quai d’Orsay a Turkish parliamentary mission led by Volkan Bozkir, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.
The parliamentarians wanted to express their shock and concern regarding the potential consequences of the parliamentary private member’s bill that would make it a crime to deny genocides recognized under French law.
M. Alain Juppé reminded his interlocutors that Turkey is a friend and ally of France, with whom he has always sought to maintain dialogue.
He recalled the meaning of the appeal launched by President Sarkozy during his visit to Armenia: an invitation for Turkey to make a gesture of remembrance regarding her history, as France did with regard to her own past.
The Ministre d’Etat expressed the conviction that our common strategic interests, our cooperation in support of peace and freedom in Syria and Afghanistan, our common membership of NATO and the G20, and our cultural and economic cooperation are strong enough to overcome any difficulties in our relations.
