French-American community - April 2011

Discover the many events organized in April by French representatives in the Southeast. Our partners, such as the local Alliances Françaises and French-American Chambers of Commerce, do an amazing job of promoting France in the area. Mark your calendars!

April 2-3 will be impacted by the Columbia International Festival (SC). This year’s festival features Parlez-vous français?, The French Connection in the Francophone (French-speaking) countries around the world. Ten of these countries will be highlighted. Nearly another 50 countries will contribute to the festival’s international flavor. The festival features an international food court, cultural entertainment from over 25 countries, 60 national/cultural exhibits, an International Bazaar, an International Fashion Show, and a Parade of Nations. On Thursday, April 7th, at 7:00 pm, Alliance Française of Atlanta (GA) will present a lecture by Jacques Mistral, Professor of economics and Research Director at the French Institute for International Relations (IFRI). He will discuss “The crisis, the G20 and the future of globalization”. The conjuncture of the financial crisis and a severe recession has shaken up the world order. What we have experienced is definitely behind us, but what does the future world hold in store? The planet is heterogeneous, not yet multi-polar; it requires international economic coordination. After the first meetings of the G20, can new governance for the world economy see the light of day? Mr. Mistral will try to answer all these questions. Where? On Friday, April 8th, at 11:00 am, the French American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta (GA) will organize a “Tour of Shippers Warehouse in Jonesboro”. Shippers Warehouse, Inc. is a provider of supply chain services (3rd party logistics or 3PL). The Company operates over 4.5 million square feet in 8 facilities in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and 500,000 square feet in Atlanta, Georgia. The Georgia tour will show the packaging operations that ships out over 3 billion bags per year. Shippers Warehouse is one of the largest co-packers in the Southeast. The facility handles a variety of food products, is a leader in recycling, & distribution of Bio-Life Science drugs. On Wednesday, April 20th, at 7:45 am, the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta (GA) and Alliance Française, with the participation of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University and Emory University, will organize a business workshop on “Doing business in French speaking Africa.” The seminar will feature 3 Panels: on « The Political Economy of French Speaking Africa, Challenges of Unstable Governments, Uncertainty, and Corruption”, “ Opportunities and Challenges for Businesses Exporting to Africa: Logistics, Banking and Finance, Franchising-Entrepreneurship” and “Economic Impact of Humanitarian Aid and Sustainable Development Efforts in Africa”. On Thursday, April 29th, Alliance Français of Atlanta (GA) will organize a lecture by French astronomer Jean-François Clervoy. Jean-François Clervoy is the only French astronaut to have had the privilege of approaching the Hubble telescope in flight.
